Can data and ethics live together?
Putting together a product as designers is a challenge on its own. But what happens when you take ethics, privacy, and data into account? What is the extent of the slippery slope about asking & storing data? In his talk, Matteo Gratton took the students through practical examples and cases from Sketch and other design products and discussed how designers can look at their process from a privacy perspective. He shared the story of how Sketch managed to build a collaboration feature that respects users’ data and design ethics, with all the challenges, pitfalls, and learnings.

How to not let a fast paced, growth driven, agile environment kill your creativity
Design systems and designers have had a love-hate relationship for a long time. Design systems are great for speed, but you can argue that design systems will add more restrictions to a project or a feature and don’t leave much room for creative exploration. At Undo, a rapidly growing fin-tech startup in the Nordics, we disagree. In contrast, we use design systems as a tool to create more room for creative exploration. By combining a well-thought-out design process, a design system, the Pareto principle, and a creativity check, we built a framework that allows us to design and build more creative solutions without compromising on efficiency and developing time. In this talk, Lisa shared her hands-on experiences working with design systems at Undo, collaboration with engineers, investment in designOps, and creativity.

From design rules to design tools
One of the most valued skills of a designer today is the ability to create beautiful and functional design systems. Whether it’s designing a set of web components or tokens for a new visual language, designers are encouraged to leave behind the focus on one-off designs and instead distill their design thinking into clear rules that can be used to create many variations of the same design. A sort of meta-designer, as Donald Knuth would put it. This approach opens up possibilities for creating custom, project-specific tools that allow customers to generate dynamic assets on demand, with rules encoded in the software itself instead of in a style guide. In this talk, Rune and Martin showed how to create web-based design tools using Mechanic, their open source design production toolchain that leverages modern web technologies to automate design workflows.

Brush, Ink & Code – The Making of a Font
Most people expect type designer Ulrike Rausch is sitting down with pen and paper to design her fonts. But actually, getting from the first drawings to a working font is not a purely analog process but rather a pretty geeky software endeavor.
In her talk, Ulrike showed how she designs typefaces and how she builds fonts. Ulrike also demonstrated how nerdy OpenType programming adds just the right analog touch to her handwriting style. She proved that it’s possible to use fonts like a pro — no matter if you use layout software like Adobe InDesign or a standard word processor like Microsoft Word.
